Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)

The stunning Richard Meier-designed MACBA is an El Raval landmark.
Superb space. Even for skateboarders.

If you get contemporary art MACBA is your type of place. Even for we philistines, some exhibitions are mind-blowing, and the permanent collection has some gems too.

The permanent collection is strong too.

The superb Richard Meier-designed space is a bonus, and even the gift shop is well curated. Recommended.

Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB)

Call it a catch-all for contemporary culture – I try to get along to the annual World Press Photo exhibition. It is definitely worth keeping an eye on the CCCB’s website for exhibitions, debates, festivals, concerts, film, courses, or workshops while you’re in town.

Komo en Kasa

Hole-in-the-wall take-away coffee joint.

Unfortunately Gustavo – Barcelona’s friendliest barista – has lost his battle with the authorities, and no longer has any window seats. Shame.

The friendly service remains, however. Plus, the empiñadas are hard to resist, and there is now some delicious – and excellent value – take-away options.
