Parc de la Ciutadella

The city’s main central park absolutely fills up on a pleasant day, but there’s always somewhere to sit and enjoy the passing parade.

The park also features some leftover – and curiously, unused – buildings from the 1888 Universal Exhibition, and a spectacular fountain and lake designed by the park’s architect Josep Fontseré.

The park is also home to Barcelona Zoo, and attached to the promenade along Passeig de Lluís Companys that culminates at the Arc de Triomf, which was the gateway to the Exhibition.

It’s also a great place for tourists to experience a bit of local color, as opposed to just seeing sites with other tourists.

Eldiset

Interior of El Diset wine bar in El Born

In an area brimming with wine bars, Eldiset is always busy, which should tell you something. The focus is on Catalan wines, and the staff will help you find something to suit your tastes – it helps that there are four choices each of whites and reds by the glass as well as a couple of cavas. The food arguably plays second-fiddle to the wines, though the cheese platter is pretty good.

Museu Picasso de Barcelona

Housed in five adjoining palaces in the old town, the Museu Picasso would be worth visiting for the architecture alone, let alone the more than 4,000 works in its permanent collection. Be aware that this is probably the busiest gallery in Barcelona – book online in advance to avoid the queues, and be prepared to view the works in the close company of a lot of tourists who are merely checking a box by being here.

If you buy the Barcelona Museum Pass or Art Passport, you’ll gain priority entry, as well as to Fundació Joan Miró, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), Fundació Antoni Tàpies, and Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA).
